Bertelsmann, the international media, services, and education company is collaborating with the lifelong learning Silicon Valley-based platform, Udacity, to promote better technical education.

The companies are now inviting interested parties to apply for its “Udacity Data Science Scholarship Program,” which will fund 15,000 three-month Udacity online courses in descriptive statistics. The top 1,500 graduates will earn one of three full Nanodegree programs offered by the lifelong learning platform.

The partnership is a natural one—Bertelsmann wants to see great data talent entering the workforce, and is committed to promoting data literacy at a global level. Udacity offers a wide array of data-centric learning opportunities and is committed to ensuring that every single learner who wants to can equip themselves with the valuable data skills that are critical for success in today’s digital economy.

Bertelsmann Chairman & CEO Thomas Rabe said: “Bertelsmann is becoming more and more digital, so promoting digital skills is one of our top priorities. Data Science is particularly important for many of our digital businesses, and we are very pleased to be offering 15,000 scholarships. Together with our partner Udacity, we are thus attempting to counter the shortage of specialists in the technology sector.”

Commenting on the partnership   Ishan Gupta, Managing Director (India) – Udacity, said “India has conventionally been one of the best sources for skills and careers that utilize logical and analytical thinking. With many graduates and students in India looking for upskilling opportunities to tap into the data analytics field, this will be a great initiative for them to open doors across the globe and help industries and businesses worldwide optimize their processes and become more data-driven.”

Pankaj Makkar, Managing Director, Bertelsmann India Investments said, “There has been a major shift in decision making processes across industries, as data science enables a more informed approach. At Bertelsmann, we are always looking to support future forward technologies which will be instrumental in shaping a better tomorrow. Bertelsmann is happy to collaborate with Udacity, which is offering this world-class course in one of the most sought-after skills today.”

Applications are now open at Udacity Website and will close on April 22, 2018. Scholarship recipients will be selected in May 2018, and start the online course shortly thereafter. Depending on their prior knowledge of statistics, mathematics and computer science, participants should plan on investing between 5 and 10 hours per week over a period of three months. The course is designed for both beginners and advanced students. At the end of the first phase of the scholarship program, the top 1,500 students can go on to earn a full Udacity Nanodegree credential, either in “Data Foundations,” “Business Analyst,” or “Data Analyst.”
